Mod note on 'USA Today: 4-year slide in gay and trans equality'
PareidoliaticBoy: "My reccomendation is just to move to Canada."
This comment has received pushback in the thread, so i'm choosing to leave it, but please note that this is not okay. "Just move" is almost never a reasonable or compassionate thing to say, and it should be avoided in general; but it is particularly unacceptable in a thread about trans people (or other minoritized people) having their civil rights taken away.
Mod note on 'So convenient that it's simply not plausible'
Fixed link in this comment.
Mod note on 'all the money is one side and all the people are on the other'
Fixed a broken link in the post.
Mod note on 'London's thieves are burying phones in flowerbeds'
One deleted. People (including me!) do have strong feelings about Substack, and i understand the temptation to point out perceived hypocrisy, but it really doesn't need to get brought up in every conversation. (And again, i've been guilty of that in the past and am trying to do better myself.)
Mod note on 'May It Continue to Happen.'
Added Substack tag.
Mod note on 'Millennium Challenge Part 2'
Folks, we missed leaving an edit note when editing the link in the post earlier. So, just for transparency: we edited a link in the post at the user's request.
Mod note on 'Backdoor dot gov'
Folks, the derail about Substack has definitely run its course; please do refocus on the actual content (or ignore this post if you hate Substack!)
Mod note on 'Backdoor dot gov'
Substack tag added.
Mod note on 'U4EA'
One comment removed. plagued out moggies, you have made your point and tiny frying pan has apologized; there's no need to insist. Can we please move on and recenter the conversation around the virtual rave itself?
Mod note on 'Who the hell are you?'
Deleted two comments for being both deraily and overgeneralizing about a population. Full disclosure: they were my own comments. I would normally avoid moderating my own comments like the plague, but unfortunately i am the only mod available for the next day or two.
Mod note on 'The Force was with us'
Mod note on 'Please Use AI (poem)'
Added Substack tag.
Mod note on 'After "Pet Sounds," what was anyone supposed to do?'
Added Substack tag.
Mod note on 'Get Paint.NET at paint.net'
JHarris, i fixed the typo in your comment and removed your subsequent comment that was just a note about the typo.
Mod note on 'โWhat can I say about him? That he listened to me."'
Fixed the link in this comment.
Mod note on 'U4EA'
Please be mindful that the first couple comments generally set the tone for a thread, and that coming in hot with a complaint unrelated to the content of a post is therefore not optimal. It's okay not to want to click on a mystery meat link or watch a 4-hour video or whatever, but the better solution in those cases is to go read a different post!
Mod note on 'Saxophone Colossus'
Edited the post to add a sentence, at user's request.
Deleted mefi post 'Trumpโs Executive Order: Signed, Sealed, andโฆ Soiled'
MetaFilter post Trumpโs Executive Order: Signed, Sealed, andโฆ Soiled deleted. This is a very thin post about something that happened several months ago (and it was discussed in at least one MetaFilter thread at the time) and the framing is just not great. It's picked up more flags than comments, and while flags aren't dispositive, this conversation seems unlikely to go well.
Mod note on 'Visor cam!'
Corrected the spelling of 'Isle of Man' in the post text.
Mod note on 'Nobel Prize Winner Olga Tokarczuk embroiled in AI scandal'
Fixed a typo in the post title and updated all links to be clickable.
Mod note on 'The political narrative itself has become the porn'
A clarification of my previous note, because it's been brought to my attention that it was arguably dismissive and should've done a better job explaining the problem:
I am aware that penis size and eugenics/Great Replacement Theory are both discussed in the linked article. However, even in that context the following things are not things that need to be part of this thread:
- Saying or implying that immigrants have bigger penises than non-immigrants. (Penis size comparison is not okay in general; it's a kind of body-shaming. And when you bring immigrants into it, it also bleeds into and reinforces racist narratives).
- If you are cis, using trans people as a rhetorical prop when discussing penis size.
- Saying or implying that it's a good idea for any group of people to outbreed any other group of people to extinction (again, even if you are suggesting that the group to be extincted is "white people", it is still buying into and reinforcing a eugenicist framework and that is not okay).
- Talking about an incident 2500 years ago involving mass sexual violence, because (a) it is not relevant and (b) sexual violence is a thing that generally needs to not end up in people's faces on MetaFilter unless it is relevant.
Mod note on 'The political narrative itself has become the porn'
Two deleted. This conversation is not likely to benefit from a derail about penis size, rape, and/or breeding anyone out of existence.
Deleted mefi post 'Best Sniper Settings in Free Fire for Accurate Shots'
MetaFilter post Best Sniper Settings in Free Fire for Accurate Shots deleted. Spam
Mod note on 'Two reports of speakers being booed at graduation'
BungaDunga, it's probably time to let the thread breathe a little. You don't need to stop talking completely, but it's kind of becoming the you-vs-the-world show in here; of the latest 20 comments in the thread, you've made 10 of them.
Mod note on 'Breeding program gives endangered frog a fighting chance'
One comment deleted as noise.
Mod note on 'Two reports of speakers being booed at graduation'
One deleted at user request.
Mod note on '"It was that freedom to just be who we were"'
Fixed a link in the post, at the user's request.
Deleted mefi post 'Frugit'
MetaFilter post Frugit deleted. User request
Mod note on 'Declining America'
greatalleycat: "To be honest, Americans don't think about Canada at all."
I'm not sure if there's some reason you've decided to come into this thread specifically to antagonize Canadians, but it's unpleasant and breaks the guidelines, and you should knock it off.
Mod note on 'Goddamn, itโs Donut'
Edited post at user's request to remove a bad link.
Mod note on 'Elite controllers'
Folks. One out of every 200 people is half a percent, or 0.5%. If you wanted to write it without a percent sign, it would be 0.005. That said, it's probably worth dropping the derail now.
Mod note on 'The Most Corrupt U.S. Administration in History'
Added Substack tag.
Mod note on 'โYou seek followers? Seek zeroes!โ'
Added Substack tag.
Mod note on 'Trial by ants'
Folks, this is me with my mod hat on. I'm sorry to have to drop into this thread this way, having already made a comment without my mod hat on, but coverage is tricky right now and a couple of the comments in here are getting flagged to hell.
I am not removing any existing comments. However, when discussing indigenous cultural practices, you absolutely need to be aware of your own cultural context, and exercise some caution to avoid falling back on racist stereotypes.
Mod note on 'The Floor Is Made Of Women'
One deleted. Copy/pasting LLM content is against the guidelines; please refer to our generated content policy.
Mod note on 'We Have a Gorilla Trade'
Two deleted for replying to a deleted comment. Kutsuwamushi, you're fine in general.
On further reflection, sammyo has been banned for 7 days and we will discuss whether it should be a permaban. (It's my bad; I didn't look carefully enough at the history.)
Mod note on 'We Have a Gorilla Trade'
Two deleted. sammyo: we don't really need to have random racist jokes introduced into the conversation, even if someone else said them and you're linking to them offsite. donnagirl: your comment was removed as a response to the deleted comment; you're fine.
Mod note on 'a kaleidoscope of butterflies'
HearHere: "๐ฆ"]
HearHere, I'm leaving this up, but just in general, you do need to contribute to the conversation with something besides just an emoji.
Mod note on 'Thirsty rebel space gladiators'
Fixed a typo in the post text!
Mod note on '"the unhealable rift forced between a human being and a native place"'
One comment edited (to remove a link) at user request.
Mod note on '"the unhealable rift forced between a human being and a native place"'
Just a note, folks: i started this thread (without my mod hat on), but i'm also the mod with most of the scheduled time for the next day and a half. I am going to be extremely cautious about performing any moderation actions in this thread unless something blows way the hell up, which obviously i would prefer not to have happen. Please FIAMO and try to keep the conversation on rails.
Mod note on 'Grieving and Remembering Juniper Blessing'
Fixed a typo in the post.
Mod note on 'The Floor Is Made Of Women'
Folks, just a gentle note: the baptism thing is turning into a derail (and making jokes about a woman getting nearly drowned is even more of one.)
Mod note on 'What is 'real' anyway'
Two comments deleted. tiny frying pan, you're fine, but if you want to talk about another user's behavior it's better to take it to MeTa at this point.
plagued out moggies, i want to address a bit from your deleted comment. You said, "TFP, youโve already been asked to stop shitting up this thread". In fact, tiny frying pan was told to try to comment more constructively; you, however, were told to stop talking to other users this way. Take a break from the thread, please.
Mod note on 'Finding out: Are we the baddies?'
Hey, folks, just popping in to say that a few things in here have gotten flagged. I don't see any need for deletions or anything, but do please try to keep the conversation on the rails.
Mod note on 'Why stop at Thomas?'
Two deleted. Folks, i understand that over time MetaFilter has gone a lot of different ways on whether "covert wishes for violent things to Mysteriously Happen" are okay. And to some extent it's always gonna be a judgment call! The userbase here is clearly pretty on edge, right now, with things that are edging into "fedposting" territory, so i've removed it.
unearthed, you're totally fine, and i'm not even going to pretend i didn't fave that one without my mod hat on, because i did; but with my mod hat on, and with the number of folks who were made uneasy by it, i think it's a distraction this thread doesn't need. Ice Cream Socialist, your comment was only deleted because it was a reply to a deleted comment.
Mod note on 'Kickstarter: Back on Their Bullshit: 'Adult' Content Guidelines Overhaul'
Fixed a typo in the post. Please carry on.
Mod note on 'What is 'real' anyway'
Hi, folks, just addressing a couple comments that have picked up flags:
tiny frying pan: i am entirely in sympathy with you here, but your comment is effectively noise. It would be better to express your objection to the subject in ways that don't feel so much like drive-by snark.
plagued out moggies: I'm not removing your comment, but you need to take this kind of thing to MeTa rather than talking to other members this way.
Mod note on 'The images were generated by an ai off the prompt โlovely knittingโ'
Several deleted because they were either posted in the wrong thread, or replying to comments deleted for that reason. You're all fine, you didn't do anything wrong, but the thread about LLM detection and "commonly used phrases" is over here. This thread is about LLM-generated fiber arts.
Mod note on 'Hockey + Broadway + Gay'
Abehammerb Lincoln: "Ah, April 2027 for a second season. Good to know when my wife will be ridiculously horny again."
I'm not going to delete this locker-room-esque comment, but please consider how this sort of thing comes across to other community members.
Mod note on 'Zero Sum Gaming the System'
Fixed that link!
Mod note on 'The creative writing students using AI to write fiction'
Duplicate comment removed. anshuman, i left the later of the two duplicates, since it had an extra sentence; hope that's okay!
Mod note on 'the blood dripping from his mouth and eyes'
URL in comment fixed. Please carry on.
Mod note on 'โThousands have lived without love, not one without water.โ'
Removed a paragraph with a duplicate link as requestedby OP
Mod note on 'National Debt just rose above GDP for the first time since WWII'
Added the USPolitics tag, out of an abundance of caution.
Mod note on 'Unique biometric facial features'
One removed for making a gross insinuation about another commenter.
Mod note on 'โthe biggest student data privacy disaster in historyโ'
One deleted. Galvanic, you have posted two comments in this thread involving "slutty clothes" analogously. I left the first one and deleted the second, but in general, that particular analogy is creating way more heat than light. Please stop.
Everyone else, please do not pile on and derail the thread.]
Mod note on 'Pinocchio is weirder than you remember'
Fixed the broken link in this comment.
Mod note on 'It's notable to me that the Met Gala gets compared to the Hunger Games'
WatTylerJr: "Demi-god Jeff "I destroy things for money money and more money" Bezos and that thing he 'married'. And so I decide I didn't like this at all."
I am not going to remove this comment, but please note that it is not ever acceptable to call a woman "that thing", regardless of how odious she is. (It is also not an acceptable thing to call anyone of any other gender, for the record.)
Mod note on 'โYou have to be very fond of men... Otherwise theyโre simply unbearable"'
One deleted. In general, it's not a great idea to have your first comment in a threadโespecially when it is also the first comment in a thread!โbe a snarky one-liner that invites a sexist reading.
Mod note on 'The morel is the Last Incorruptible Thing'
Sanicula: "I've always found it fascinating that morels seem to be the only wild food that midwesterns are universally excited to forage. Well...aside from deer that they pick off from a sniper post in their backyard."
Yeah, I'm not going to delete this, but please do not do this. Midwesterners are not, actually, an undifferentiated mass of gun-toting hicks. Some of them even read MetaFilter!
Mod note on 'The Sorcerer is dead'
One comment removed as requested.
Mod note on 'Bad to worse'
The derail taking place needs to stop, please take it to Memail if necessary.
Mod note on 'Worse on Purpose'
edited aleph's comment to make the link clickable
Mod note on 'Your Favorite Republican Hoods'
okayturnip: i'm absolutely not saying the conversation can't focus on Kneecap's politics! (I may not have drawn the distinction i was trying to make as clearly as i would like, in which case i'm sorry.)
They're a very political band and that's an important part of their story! I just mean, it would be good if we could avoid getting off into the weeds too far (such as whether Hezbollah is a worse actor than the US. I think everyone on MetaFilter probably knows my actual personal feelings on that by nowโit's still, in my opinion, too far afield for this thread.)
Mod note on 'How Trump is moving to control U.S. elections, one state at a time'
Folks, relitigating the 2024 election is absolutely a derail. Please do not do that in here.
Gyre,Gimble,Wabe, Esq., your comment contained an unacceptable level of contempt for other MeFites, and it's been deleted. Stuff like this is absolutely not okay: "I don't get why people are surprised or even want to remark on this kind of stuff here. You guys knew this was in the play book. Welcome to your dystopia. Enjoy grubbing a rotten potato out of the ground."
Mod note on 'How Trump is moving to control U.S. elections, one state at a time'
Fixed link error in post.
Mod note on 'Your Favorite Republican Hoods'
Folks, let's avoid getting too far afield of the topic of the post (which is Kneecap) into derails about Hezbollah and Palestine. "Kneecap getting charged with terrorism because of Palestine/Lebanon support" is on-topic, but a segue into arguing about Palestine or Lebanon more directly โฆ probably isn't.
(I know i contributed to that myself yesterday, without my mod hat on, and i'm sorry about thatโthis note is absolutely meant to include me!)
Mod note on 'We desperately need better skepticism'
Two comments edited to make the links clickable.
Mod note on 'Minnesota nice kitty'
chariot pulled by cassowaries, just fyi, i've edited the link in your comment to be clickable.
Mod note on 'Info Has Won The InfoWars'
JHarris, i've fixed the link in your first comment and deleted your second (which only contained the correct link).
Mod note on 'Was Nate the true villain of the Devil Wears Prada?'
Hey jamjam, this comment comes across as pretty sexist. I'm not deleting it, but in future please refrain from making statements about what "women want" and from statements that imply that straight men as a class are locked in existential conflict with their female partners.
Mod note on 'Turning decommissioned wind turbine blades into surfboard fins'
Just a note, folks: I have removed the other post, even though it was technically the first one, because this one had the bulk of the on-topic comments. This one is, however, no longer a double!
Deleted mefi post 'Turning decommissioned wind turbine blades into surfboard fins'
MetaFilter post Turning decommissioned wind turbine blades into surfboard fins deleted. Double.
Mod note on 'Controversial Songwriter David Allan Coe has died at 86.'
Folks, i'm not deleting anything in here yet. However, please do be careful, when you are not defending bigotry (or, especially, the use of slurs), that you don't end up sounding like you're defending it by accident.
Mod note on 'We desperately need better skepticism'
Three comments deleted. They're all from yesterday; i am just popping in to clean up the rest of the derail of users sniping at each other, especially since the context was lost given that the inciting comment was deleted yesterday.
Mod note on 'The current cigarette discourse is getting spicy'
Also, just a note that calling substance-dependent folks "nasty addict[s]" is not something we encourage here. I'm letting the comment stand but please do not talk about people this way. Many, many folks are addicted to something.
Mod note on 'We are GOBLINS! Bum ba-dum, bum-bum-bum-bum!'
Edited post text at poster's request!
Mod note on 'The current cigarette discourse is getting spicy'
tiny frying pan: i think this line of questioning has gone on long enough; take it to MeMail if Don Pepino's comment isn't sufficient to answer your question.
Mod note on 'House GOP concedes in DHS funding fight, reopening TSA but blocking ICE'
Added USPolitics tag! Please carry on!
Mod note on 'The current cigarette discourse is getting spicy'
One comment removed, its responses left for context. Let's try to be sensitive to context by avoiding holocaust comparisons here.
Deleted mefi post 'Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) appears in Women and Men'
MetaFilter post Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) appears in Women and Men deleted. User's request
Mod note on 'Roberts Court Deals a Death Blow to the Voting Rights Act'
Folks, i do understand that this is all interconnected (i say so often!), but try not to relitigate the 2024 election (or any earlier elections)) in here unless it's genuinely relevant, please?
Mod note on 'I'm a Mary Ann but I've also always wished to be surrounded by Mary Anns'
One comment removed as requested.
Mod note on 'We desperately need better skepticism'
One deleted. Name-calling isn't OK. Please stop engaging each other in arguments in this thread.
Mod note on 'In Australia, homeless camps are rising as affordability falls'
Also, fixed the conversion factor in chariot pulled by cassowaries' comment, with permission.
Mod note on 'Less is more'
flabdablet: you are threadsitting here. Give the conversation room to breathe, please!
Mod note on 'georgia and florida are burning'
Okay, enough. saladin, jamjam, and 922257033c4a0f3cecdbd819a46d626999d1af4a, please stop derailing the thread by sniping at each other. Everyone else, please do not feel tempted to help out here.
Mod note on 'georgia and florida are burning'
jamjam: "I doubt thereโs going to be a whole lot of sand left, what with people like you needing so much to put their heads in."
Please do not talk to other members like this!
Mod note on 'In Australia, homeless camps are rising as affordability falls'
chariot pulled by cassowaries: just a note that you're verging on threadsitting here. The conversation needs a little room to breathe!
Mod note on 'US millionaire big-game hunter dies after being crushed by elephants'
One deleted. It's ableist and upsetting to use Joseph Merrick*'s disability to make a throwaway joke.]
*aka the Elephant Man
Mod note on 'Are you shitting me?'
One deleted; i think it was posted to the wrong thread. At any rate, it wasn't connected to the conversation in here.
Mod note on 'GLP-1's may help a variety of conditions unrelated to obesity'
MattD: "The weirdest feeling has got to be the fat people who aren't (yet) on the shot. The sense of sheer inevitability, that every late night snack or second serving at dinner is close to the last one before it never happens again."
This is amazingly condescending as well as sizeist and arguably ableist, and it is moralizing about fatness and fat people (at the end of a comment condemning other people for moralizing about fatness and fat people, no less!) Fat people are not an abstraction or a hypothetical, we are real and we aren't all desperate to be thin. (And fatness is not always caused by overeating.) Please be more mindful.
Deleted mefi post 'The Best Free Restaurant Bread in America by Caity Weaver'
MetaFilter post The Best Free Restaurant Bread in America by Caity Weaver deleted. Double. Duplicate post!
Mod note on 'The Era of Citizens United Could Be Nearing Its End'
Galvanic: "Ok boomer."
I'm letting this stand in the thread, but please do not talk to other members like this. Drive-by condescension doesn't create a good climate for conversation.
Mod note on 'The Disappearance of the Public Bench'
Hey, just a quick note: conflating women with AFAB people is Not Great wording! It's upsetting to a lot of transmasc and nonbinary people to be rhetorically lumped into the "woman" bucket this way.
Mod note on 'Thankfully, there are still some sensible people in the world.'
Changed post title, with poster's permission.
Mod note on 'The SPLC indictment, the Klan history behind it...'
I fixed the HTML in this comment by Silvery Fish, and deleted two comments related to the broken link (the first commenter specifically requested that their comment be deleted after the link was fixed, and the second deleted comment was a reply to that one.)
Mod note on 'Can Everyone Just Please Be Normal?'
Just chiming in to suggest we drop the Billy Joel derail, the point has been made.
Mod note on 'New, additional criteria for identifying ADHD in adults'
URL in the post has been fixed. Please carry on.]
