Mod note on 'Binface vs Fascist dumpster fire: it is on'

One comment removed because the link (to a Reddit post) went dead and it was getting flagged.

Mod note on 'I want to copy files from my mac to my samsung phone'

One removed as noise.

Mod note on '"You know what you have to do, carry on"'

Three comments removed. Folks, this post has gotten several flags and the conversation is going to some really ugly places. Please try to remember that your fellow community members, including the ones with suicidal ideation, are reading this. It's 100% fine to be angry at the guy, to be clear (i am too!), but jokes are definitely really fraught in this kind of situation and it would probably be better to Not.

Mod note on 'Graham Platner is a bad dude โ€” and data shows he's a bad candidate, too'

Two comments removed, one for being really aggressive to another member and the other replying to that one. Other replies left up for context. Folks, please try to keep the temperature at a reasonable level in here.

Deleted mefi post 'lorem ipsum mystery solved'

MetaFilter post lorem ipsum mystery solved deleted. Double.

Mod note on 'Back when people offered body parts to RBG'

Fixed typo in post title and URL.

Mod note on 'Board Update, July 4, 2026'

I think i fixed all the rest of the broken links. Thanks, grandsham!

Mod note on 'A media format where aimless speculation is both expected & encouraged'

Also, corrected typo in this comment at poster's request. (It's me, i was the poster; it was a one-letter typo and it was driving me bugfuck.)

Mod note on 'Pawboots [SLYT] 2 Min ad. Safe for Work. Just video & background music'

Hi, folks! Just a note that in general posts like this (where it's basically an organic advertisement) are borderline at best, and they get a lot of flags. The conversation here seems to be going well and i'm going to leave this up, but please don't take it as license to go full-on Pepsi Blue in future.

Deleted mefi post 'Ad astra per aspergera'

MetaFilter post Ad astra per aspergera deleted. Conversation isn't going to go well, and i would rather nip it in the bud rather than leave *another* link to a transphobic guy up on the front page, unfortunately.

Mod note on 'A media format where aimless speculation is both expected & encouraged'

Hi there, folks. Some housekeeping:
  • Compact Mag is horrible, their editorial slant is mega-transphobic, and Michael Tracey specifically is a right-wing rape-apologist goon, so this single-link post really doesn't qualify as Best Of The Web.
  • However, the conversation in here is lively and i'm pretty hesitant to nuke the whole thing. If it'd been nuked when there were three comments, that'd be one thing, but there are now over 40, including a lot of pushback on the gross aspects of Compact, Tracey, and the post, and i don't really want to memory-hole it all now?
  • On the third hand, i invite someone to start a MeTa to discuss this, because i do think there are site policy issues implicated here!

Mod note on 'Now does a vendor already know my new credit card number?'

One deleted for noise. Letโ€™s keep comments helpful and intended to answer OPโ€™s question.

Mod note on 'Safetynovela'

Fixed spelling of "Philippine" in post

Mod note on 'Board Update, July 4, 2026'

Fixed a broken link in the post.

Mod note on 'For revolting barbarity & shameless hypocrisy, America reigns'

Added "USPolitics" tag at a user's request (not the OP's)

Mod note on 'Heat vs. cold'

Two deleted for not even trying to answer the question. Folks, it's really chatty in here; please tread carefully and make sure you have some kind of answer (or at least a clarifying question) in addition to commentary!

Deleted mefi post 'A Land oโ€™ Cakes'

MetaFilter post A Land oโ€™ Cakes deleted. Deleted at poster's request (AI generated soundtrack casts doubt on the entire post)

Mod note on '"Can't help but wonder what's gone wrong..."'

Fixed the spelling of Rhiannon Giddens' name in the OP.

Mod note on 'Three Hundred Fifty-Four Fireworks per Second'

I've updated the link in this comment (there's a redirect issue with the https:// version of the link; i've edited it to the http:// version, which will then correctly redirect to https:// ). I've also removed two comments that were entirely about this issue.

Mod note on 'from James Murdoch's Vox...'

Two deleted; a few other replies left up for context. runsrealgood: you are fine, but the form of your pushback was making it personal about another member in a way that was likely to cause more problems. yoz420: you need to take a break from this thread, and from one-note allegations about antisemitism/blood libel in general. If you cannot, the next steps will include timeouts. I strongly encourage you, instead of doing that, to take your concerns to [email protected] or the MOC. Also, because i consider it likely that at least one person will be extra mad that i, specifically, am the mod actioning this particular issue, i want to make it very clear that while we are actively in the process of revamping mod policies and procedures, this kind of thing is not going to be acceptable to any other mod, either.

Mod note on 'What artwork makes you feel tranquil?'

One comment deleted at the user's request.

Deleted ask post 'Where will Vice-President Newsom live and work?'

Ask MetaFilter post Where will Vice-President Newsom live and work? deleted. Breaks the guidelines.

Mod note on 'Forward Guidance 2: Electrification Boogaloo'

Full disclosure: my (non-moderator) comment above has been flagged. As i try very hard to avoid moderating my own comments, i am leaving the flag up for the next mod on shift to make a decision. I will avoid commenting further in this thread in my personal capacity until after that happens; speaking in my official capacity, it would be good if the thread didn't get derailed by it.

Mod note on 'MeFiCoFo Financial Update, June 2026'

Fixed the link in the OP; thanks for catching that, pwnguin!

I'm leaving the comments related to the mistake.

Mod note on 'Three Hundred Fifty-Four Fireworks per Second'

Folks, everyone is on edge and this whole fireworks thing is bullshit, but please try not to snipe at other users? Thanks!

Mod note on 'Adjusting clamping pressure on Schuco barrel hinge'

Fixed URL

Mod note on 'Schism!'

Fixed link in this comment to be clickable.

Mod note on 'Do Scots men truly correct other Scots men in bar pickups?'

Another comment deleted as noise. Folks, this is still Ask, and your comments must answer the Asker's question in some way.

Mod note on 'Can you recommend a non-slip, mold-resistant shower mat?'

Fixed link in this comment to be clickable (and to clear tracking params).

Mod note on 'Looking for 80s-90s hardcover cookbook possibly geared towards kids'

Fixed a typo in the post.

Mod note on 'I need suggestions for the best canned chicken noodle soup'

One deleted for arguing about moderation. Please send an email via the Contact Form or refer it to the MOC if you have an issue!

Mod note on 'Do Scots men truly correct other Scots men in bar pickups?'

One deleted as noise. Folks, i get that some things invite jokes but you gotta be really careful in Ask; if you're gonna put a joke in you have to also put an actual answer in.

Mod note on 'I need suggestions for the best canned chicken noodle soup'

One deleted for arguing with the premise of the question (and in the process failing to answer it).

Mod note on 'Book: The Sword of the Lictor'

Fixed spelling of GeneWolfe tag

Mod note on 'Esthetician test prep'

Fixed link in post and deleted correction comment by Asker

Mod note on 'Forward Guidance 2: Electrification Boogaloo'

Fixed typo in post title and url

Mod note on 'How embarrassing to discover we will never be as cool as father'

Please avoid using โ€œderpโ€ in this discussion. It has been widely used as a slur or mockery of people with intellectual disabilities, and even when someone intends it casually, it can still read as ableist and demeaning. We ask that comments use plain, non-stigmatizing language instead.

Deleted mefi post 'Alito Retires'

MetaFilter post Alito Retires deleted. News was retracted.

Mod note on 'I Would Consider Little Condoms, Even'

One deleted for not answering the question.

Mod note on 'Not Maxxing'

Fixed link in this comment to be clickable.

Mod note on '๐ŸŽตEasement like Sunday morning ๐ŸŽต'

Double comment and one comment about it it deleted.

Mod note on 'Rideshare overshare'

Two deleted, one as noise and one for chastising other commenters (and not answering the question).

Mod note on 'I feel silly after a negative internet interaction'

Folks, i hate leaving big holes in the conversation, but several comments have been deleted. Jane the Brown, your comment was read by multiple people as equating folks' use of pronoun labeling/sharing on forums with bullying and physical violence. I'm not assuming that it was intentional transphobia, but at best it was extremely unclear, it upset several people, and it was continuing to be a distraction. I can send you the full text if you'd like to try rewriting that bit and reposting; just let me know.

Everyone else: sorry for the delays getting this handled. If your comment also got deleted, it was because it was part of the derail, and you'refine.]

Mod note on 'Anthony Burgess interview'

One deleted as a duplicate.

Mod note on 'unique food experience filter: whole candied clementines'

...sorry, i have been corrected, having misread the reason the comment was flagged. One therefore deleted as noise.

Mod note on 'Thank you, Lyn Never'

Folks, this MeTa post was obviously born out of a generous impulse (and ngl, i adore Lyn Never and am connected to her elseweb!) But posts about specific users who have buttoned make folks nervous (it's already picked up some flags), so i wanted to be very clear up front: sending good wishes and saying nice things is fine! But we do need to respect folks' privacy and autonomy, too, and in particular it's not great when these sorts of posts turn into rehashing the reasons a user buttoned. So please be mindful and keep things on rails!

Mod note on 'The framing does not stay on the page'

Added tags for AI and LLM.

Mod note on 'how does a US empire benefit from enabling Israel's actions?'

One deleted at user's request.

Mod note on 'Cory Doctorow has some thoughts on coping with Ai'

Fixed the misspelling of Cory Doctorow's name in the post title (and slug).

Mod note on 'Tom Gauld's latest New Yorker cover ...'

Edited post to fix typos and add another link from the user.

Mod note on 'how does a US empire benefit from enabling Israel's actions?'

Folks: predictably, a number of comments in this thread have gotten flagged. I think the thread is overall doing alright, and things that needed pushback are getting pushback, so i'm disinclined at this point to leave holes in the conversation. We are keeping an eye on the thread, but please help us out by keeping it on the rails, thanks.

Mod note on 'Irrationally exuberant / Rare notable exceptions. RIP Randian Greenspan'

Link to obituary updated in post.

Mod note on 'Did Kamala Harrisโ€™s Silence on Gaza Cost Her the White House?'

Just a note to please stop name-calling/insulting peopleโ€™s intelligence. Thanks!

Mod note on 'It only had one job....'

Please drop the Israel derail and bring this back to the actual topic of the post. Continued derails may result in comments being removed.

Mod note on 'Dune is not supposed to be science fiction. It is religious commentary.'

No comments removed so far. Varion, your comments in this thread are moving away from discussing ideas and into attacking other users, which is not acceptable here. Insisting that people use AI when they clearly do not want to, and framing their refusal as a personal failing rather than a preference, is not how we expect disagreements to be handled on MetaFilter. You can make your point without attacking or belittling other users. Language like calling people โ€œmentally derangedโ€ or saying they โ€œcower in ignoranceโ€ is out of bounds because it targets and insults other members instead of engaging with their arguments. Please take a step away from this tread and let the conversation move on.

Mod note on '15 feet wide, 15 feet high, don't you like my 15 feet ride?'

Fixed a very small typo in the post title.

Mod note on 'The white working class knows the American project isnโ€™t working.'

Two comments removed as requested.

Mod note on '15 feet wide, 15 feet high, don't you like my 15 feet ride?'

One comment removed as requested.

Mod note on '15 feet wide, 15 feet high, don't you like my 15 feet ride?'

One deleted. Jokes about running people over/harming certain groups of people is not ok.

Mod note on 'Pootus'

One deleted for really aggressively doing the thing i suggested that folks should be mindful about. If you object to a moderation decision, you have multiple channels to avail yourself of in order to complain about it; "emphatically ignoring it to Do the Thing anyway" is not one of those channels. Seriously, everyone, Donald Trump is not reading MetaFilter! Some of the people who are reading MetaFilter are pretty consistently upset by the incontinence jokes (and the fat jokes), and they are your fellow community members. The entire rest of the internet exists, and on much of it you will get endless praise and upvotes for telling those kinds of jokes! Please exercise a modicum of self-restraint on this one site!

Mod note on 'They Kiss In Chapter 15'

Added link to post at user's request.

Mod note on 'Bro, back off from the machines in [names redacted] counties!'

anoldfriend6: commenting this much in your Ask threads is generally discouraged. It's fine to pop in to respond to clarifying questions, but arguing directly with answers is not something you should be doing.

Mod note on 'Help me calm down about poison ivy exposure'

Removed a duplicate comment.

Mod note on 'Book: The Claw of the Conciliator'

Swapped out a link in this comment.

Mod note on 'His worst investment'

Some housekeeping notes: The malware attack hit all of Gizmodo yesterday; they seem to have mitigated it now. As ever, if a "captcha" requests that you do anything at all outside of your browser, like scan a QR code or paste commands into your terminal, it's malware and you should not do that thing. Also, symbioid, this comment is right on the line of "wishing violence on people", particularly since it's sexualized violence, and it's upset a few people. I'm not removing it but please be mindful?

Mod note on 'The Case of the Terrible Senior Girlfriend'

Three deleted. amtho, it's not a good idea to ascribe someone's bad behaviors to neurodivergence. The other comments were deleted for responding to the deleted comment.

Mod note on 'What do hiring managers think of this form of recruiting?'

Two deleted; answers in Ask must answer the question rather than getting into side conversations with other users (or with mods). If you have an issue with moderation, please take it to MeTa or the contact form.

Mod note on 'MetaFilter members were immediately suspicious'

Folks, it is officially acceptable for this to be in MeTa; it's in line with things that have historically been posted here, and there's no reason it would need to be moved.

Mod note on 'Doctor's Office wants my disabled friend to fax papers'

Two deleted for not answering the question. Further notes:

a) Posting a list of several unvetted internet fax services from an internet search isn't helpful; OP has made clear that they have tried those services and they have not worked.

b) Answers should definitely assume that physically taking records to the office is a nonstarter.

Mod note on 'The "tears of things"'

One deleted at user's request.

Mod note on 'Pootus'

Folks, i'm not deleting anything in here, but this has come up before, so please note that incontinence isn't in any sense a moral failure. It happens to a lot of folks, some of whom may be your fellow MeFites. I get the urge to make fun of every single gross thing that Trump does or is, but there's splash damage on some of those jokes and it would be good to be mindful of that.

Mod note on 'Bro, back off from the machines in [names redacted] counties!'

Folks, this question has picked up numerous flags and feedback on the contact form. I'm not choosing to remove it at this time; however, that doesn't mean it's without issues.

anoldfriend6: This question is written in a way that (a) seems deliberately inflammatory and (b) reads as soliciting answers which would be straightforwardly illegal; neither of those are things we encourage on Ask (and (b) is straightforwardly against the rules). Please be more careful in the future. It looks like you have been following along and has selected some best answers for productive ways you can move forward which aren't illegal, however.

Everyone else: please remember that gambling isn't illegal, even if you don't like it or see any moral value in it. If you are unable to view this as a problem to solve within OP's gaming community, consider skipping the thread.

Mod note on 'What do hiring managers think of this form of recruiting?'

Candleman: i'm not removing this comment, but do be aware that language like "Bob in India" reads to some folks as racist; please work on your phrasing in the future.

Mod note on 'Which Phone Next?'

One deleted for not answering the question.

Mod note on 'The superfan who says he can stop goals'

Also, folks, as we have noted on past occasions, it's not great to jump into a thread just to be dismissive, particularly in the first couple comments. And it's especially not great in this instance, where there are strong links to African history and the horrors of colonialism. I'm not removing any comments, because folks have pushed back strongly and the conversation seems to be recovering, but seriously, please do better.

Mod note on 'Scotland World Cup fans drink Boston dry'

Added "football" tag.

Mod note on 'The superfan who says he can stop goals'

Added "football" tag.

Mod note on 'Android verification is coming'

Fixed a typo in the post.

Mod note on 'So convenient that it's simply not plausible'

Two comments removed: the first at the user's request (wrong thread), and the second for responding to the deleted comment. (mittens: i don't disagree with you that it fit in this thread too! but the user wanted it removed.)

Mod note on 'Doctor's Office wants my disabled friend to fax papers'

One deleted for not answering the question.

Mod note on 'From Mom and Dad to Just Mom'

One Answer removed as requested by its author.

Mod note on 'Widow's Bay: Emergency Shelter'

Two deleted at user's request.

Mod note on 'Reverse dupe jewelry question'

virve: i fixed the typos in your post and deleted the typo-correction comment!

Mod note on 'AI denial is now a problem of the Left'

plagued out moggies, your behavior in this thread is not in good faith and your participation is derailing the thread entirely. Also, it is completely inappropriate to use a member's username as a way to sneer/poke at other members. That needs to stop now. Additionally, you need to take a break from this thread. Any further comments will result in a temp-ban.

Mod note on 'Ever encountered an undercover agent? Or, had the suspicion? Free Thread'

One deleted. Please flag comments you take issue with and move on. Spelling out damaging stereotypes and tropes to make a point doesnโ€™t actually help anyone, especially the folks being mentioned from said communities.

Mod note on 'AI denial is now a problem of the Left'

One deleted. Posterโ€™s request.

Mod note on 'Is it a thing now for Trump speeches to be shown before movies?'

One comment removed. Please avoid starting a side conversation in response to orther comments. AskMeFi comments should answer the question being asked.

Mod note on 'Ever encountered an undercover agent? Or, had the suspicion? Free Thread'

No comments removed for now, but let's not use protected classes (sexual orientation, race, and religion) to make a point; this is considered inappropriate here, moreover if it includes highlighting negative stereotypical characteristics historically related to those classes. This comes across as particularly violent towards those classes when you are comparing them to a job, which is not a fair comparison.

Deleted ask post 'Noise Code Compliance'

Ask MetaFilter post Noise Code Compliance deleted. Poster's request

Mod note on 'Seeking: messenger bag of my dreams'

Two comments deleted. (The first was a link to a closed store that also didn't fit the Asker's parameters; the second was a response to the first.)

Mod note on 'where in the world is Graham Platner?'

Another comment deleted. Folks, it's definitely against the guidelines to accuse Askers of having nefarious purposes. If you suspect someone has a nefarious purpose, please flag it with a note; breaking the commenting guidelines isn't helpful.

Mod note on 'AI denial is now a problem of the Left'

Folks, the temperature in here absolutely needs to come down. I'm reluctant to delete a whole swath of comments but you gotta stop sniping at each other.

Mod note on 'Why do World Cup matches create more hassles than football games?'

One deleted as noise.

Mod note on 'Where to find good hair consultant in Boston area?'

One deleted. Again, folks, "ask an LLM", much like "just Google it", is not an appropriate answer in Ask under almost any circumstances.

Deleted mefi post 'How to top up in Free Fire'

MetaFilter post How to top up in Free Fire deleted. Spam

Mod note on 'Ever encountered an undercover agent? Or, had the suspicion? Free Thread'

Added free thread tag.

Deleted mefi post 'I can't stand women from the 80s...'

MetaFilter post I can't stand women from the 80s... deleted. MetaFilter is not a place for weird misogynist rants.

Mod note on 'The struggle to command the alt key is real - moving from mac to pc'

Fixed a typo in this comment.

Mod note on 'Field Deployment Checklist?'

Fixed a typo in this comment.

Mod note on 'where in the world is Graham Platner?'

One deleted for being hostile and not really answering the question.
