Mod note on 'Europeโs heat has become too lethal to ignore'
Edited archive link in OP and deleted two comments about the correction.
Mod note on 'Canada/US Trade Talks Collapse'
Yeah, i'm not going to re-delete it, but let's not continue with the military derail, please.
Mod note on 'Canada/US Trade Talks Collapse'
Mod note on 'Canada/US Trade Talks Collapse'
Also, folks, the "how people are treated" derail should either stop or go elsewhere.
Mod note on 'The cleverness of the arrangement is it leaves no one to rebel against'
Added Substack tag, and one comment deleted.
Folks, Pangram is more accurate than other "AI" detectors, but it's less accurate on this kind of very formal writing than it is on other kinds of writing, because this kind of thing is overrepresented in the training corpus. Philosophers, in particular, are trained to write like this.
So i don't know if the content at this link is "AI" or not. And while i personally hate "AI", the community keeps making it pretty clear that they're not thrilled about every discussion getting derailed by that question. If you must say something, please keep it to one comment; but in general, the better practice is probably to flag it to our attention and/or just not engage with the post.
Mod note on 'Canada/US Trade Talks Collapse'
One deleted; we do not need to relitigate the 2024 US election in a thread that's primarily about Canada.
Mod note on 'Its hands are indecent and have been censored out'
Fixed broken markup in OP and deleted a comment about the correction.
Mod note on 'Suck It Suits'
One comment deleted at user's request, and a second comment deleted because the user was under the mistaken impression that this is an obit thread (Felicia Day is not dead!) Also fixed the spelling of Patton Oswalt's name in this comment.
Mod note on 'The Catcher in the AI'
Fixed typo in OP.
Mod note on 'Revisiting spurious bans'
anoldfriend6: "lol women users fighting on the interwebs, rawr"
Sorry for the delay in responding to this, folks; mod coverage is light on Fridays. To be clear, this is completely unacceptable and it needs to not happen again, anoldfriend6.

Mod note on 'Oh Shit! I'm Autistic'
One comment deleted at user's request.
I've added the "AI" tag to this post so folks who want to skip this kind of thing entirely have the tools to do so. Also, folks, this comment has gotten flagged a few times for being LLM-generated, and it's definitely true that part of it is, but that part is directly quoted from the linked source, which is currently a weird gray area.
hankscorpio83, you're not in trouble! But it'd be good if in the future you would use the <blockquote> tag or otherwise make clearer that you are quoting content from elsewhere, especially if that content bears the hallmarks of being generated by an LLM.
Mod note on 'Next steps in healthcare complaint'
One deleted for not answering the question.
Mod note on 'Trans New Weird'
Thanks, DoT! I've edited my previous mod note to reflect correct information. (Folks have definitely been using both)
Mod note on 'Movie: Contact'
One comment deleted as noise. It's fine to think something sucks but you gotta talk about why.
Mod note on 'Trans New Weird'
Just a quick note that Jane Schoenbrun is a "she", not a "they", and it's especially important to be careful about pronouns when talking about trans folks because they get misgendered and degendered all the time. It was clearly unintentional and i'm going to leave it, but i did want to remind folks to use care!
Okay, apparently i am wrong (thanks DoT) and Schoenbrun does in fact use they/them pronouns! So i'm a shining example of my own mod note here; sorry, folks. (A number of other people do use "she" in the thread, so my point stands that we need to be careful! But i am sorry for having failed to double-check the details.)
Deleted fanfare post 'Book: Moonflow by Bitter Karella'
FanFare post Book: Moonflow by Bitter Karella deleted. Duplicate of https://fanfare.metafilter.com/27147/Moonflow
Mod note on 'Opinion on AI-generated comments'
Hi, folks. Just to reiterate in an official capacity: we do in fact have policy on this. You should not use "AI" to write your posts or comments, and if you feel it's absolutely necessary to do so, you must label that content. (The relevant section of the Content Policy is here.)
Obviously we don't actually have a magic way to detect every use of "AI" for posts and comments on this site. We're on the honor system, and you can probably get away with it, at least some of the time. But choosing that path means that you are deliberately deceiving your fellow community members. It is disrespectful and gross; people are definitely going to be mad if and when they discover it, and you will fully deserve that anger.

Mod note on 'Looking for kind, sci-fi books'
Fixed a typo in this comment.
Mod note on 'Help me build a list of personal catostrophic disasters and failures'
Several deleted. Things got very chatty and not at all answer-y in here; anoldfriend6 and okayturnip, please take the chatting to MeMail and stick to answers and/or clarifications in Ask, thanks!
Mod note on 'Its hands are indecent and have been censored out'
Fixed link in this comment and deleted a follow-up about the error.
Mod note on 'Movie: Police, Adjective'
Fixed broken link in OP!
Mod note on 'Looking for kind, sci-fi books'
Fixed a typo in the OP
Mod note on 'Cool lil stickers'
Fixed link in this comment.
Mod note on 'How does Mamdani do it?'
One deleted for not answering the question. If you'd like to ask a related question, it's fine to make a new post on Ask for yourself!
Mod note on 'Opinion on AI-generated comments'
Fixed broken link in this comment.
Mod note on 'What Pavement song is this?'
Fixed typo in OP.
Mod note on 'Silo: The Drive'
Fixed post to be "Show Only" so that the episodes connect up.
Mod note on 'Seeking a quote about Princess Diana'
Fixed typo in post title/URL
Mod note on 'Please Share Your Favorite Red Velvet Cake Recipe'
One deleted for not answering the question.
Mod note on 'LARPing the โBroken American Dreamโ'
Two deleted. Ideefixe, this is the second comment of yours i've seen today where you seem to be trying to bait people into a fight about racial justice issues. Knock it off; the next one gets you a timeout.
(sickos, you're fine, your comment was deleted because it was a direct reply to the other one.)
Mod note on '"A Tragedy On So Many Levels"'
Removed a comment referencing Rachel Dolezal that was absolutely going to start an irrelevant fight.
Mod note on 'A Recounting of D&D Dice'
Added an archive link to the OP, in consultation with the user.
Again, folks, it is not against the guidelines to link to social media, and complaining about it (especially in the first few comments) drags down threads and irritates people. If you cannot access a link for whatever reason, it's totally fine to skip a post!
Mod note on '"A Tragedy On So Many Levels"'
Hi, folks. Many things in this thread are being flagged. One comment has been deleted for being callous; i've also added a "suicide" tag to the post. A couple notes for the conversation more broadly:
- Suicide is a very fraught topic in general, and this incident is particularly ugly for many reasons; please be very aware that conversations like this can trigger or exacerbate suicidal ideation in your fellow community members, and exercise care in making your points.
- If you are struggling with depression or suicidal ideation, we do have a page on the wiki with mental health and suicide-prevention resources. Please, do not damage yourself for the sake of this thread, and ask for help if you need it.
- The pushback on the framing of the post is very valuable, and i am letting it stand (sickos, thank you in particular for being vigilant here). I do think the point has been made and further discussion about it should probably go to MeTa.
Mod note on 'Branching out from Disney and Pixar for a young 20 something'
Fixed typo in this comment.
Mod note on 'One must imagine Sisyphus happy... I guess???'
One deleted as noise.
Mod note on 'Uniquely bad, badly unique'
One deleted at user's request.
Mod note on 'I'm done coding with AI'
Folks, i'm not going to delete anything right now, because i'd have to leave giant holes in the thread, but conversation about people who have buttoned is absolutely off-topic here and needs to go to MeTa if you want to continue it.
Mod note on 'Help me Swear Atheistically! And Aesthetically!'
One comment deleted at the user's request.
Deleted mefi post 'Simultaneously Miraculous and Mundane'
MetaFilter post Simultaneously Miraculous and Mundane deleted. User's request
Mod note on 'Chucklehead petition showing exponential growth'
Deleted a comment that related to a now-fixed error in OP.
Mod note on '48 in 28'
Added to USPolitics sidebar. Also, one comment deleted as noise.
Mod note on 'Why did we wait so long for the bicycle?'
Added Substack tag; edited links to be clickable in this comment and this comment.
Mod note on 'EstrangementTok'
One deleted at user's request.
Mod note on 'The happy tragic tale of 2019s best DVD rental store'
Edited OP to add Matchmaker link, and removed a comment about the change.
Mod note on 'I thought my partner was divorced. Surprise!'
OP asked us to post this comment:
Thank you all for your thoughts. I definitely am getting the sense that legal marital status holds a different level of significance to different people. Talking a bit with my partner I think we both have regrets about not being clearer in our communication. A couple points to clarify:
1. I did not probe deeper into my partner's status because I genuinely thought there was nothing to ask about - I met them on an online platform where you can set your status as single/married/separated, and they were listed as "single". Me saying "I don't really want to know" was more like, I don't like to interrogate my partners about their exes, you know?
2. I am not entirely sure where the assumption from some posters that my partner is male came from, but they do in fact use they/them pronouns.

Deleted mefi post 'A letter to those from the 80s'
MetaFilter post A letter to those from the 80s deleted. Misogynist rants are completely unacceptable for MetaFilter.
Mod note on 'Virtual mailbox service for American living abroad'
Made link clickable in this comment.
Mod note on '"pressure and flooding"'
Made link clickable in this comment.
Mod note on 'Birthday finger food snacks for vegans who prefer savory'
Duplicate comment removed.
Mod note on 'The Age of Spiraling Machines'
Nothing deleted, but yeah, please do not compare people with cognitive impairments to bullshit machines. The analogy there is always going to upset people and it generates way more heat than light.
Mod note on '"But I would be ashamed to have written any part of this script"'
Two deleted. If you find yourself repeating the same points over and over again, it might be time to let the thread breathe, just in general.
Mod note on 'Abdul El-Sayed wins Michigan Senate Democratic Primary'
Mod note on 'Pneumonia, Asthma, Prednisone, oh my...'
One deleted. I kind of hated to do it; it clearly represented real effort and an attempt to be helpful on the part of the user who made it, but it didn't really answer the question. If you're the user in question, i'm happy to send you the text if you want to try to rework it some!
Deleted ask post 'Film nerds: beta-test my film app?'
Ask MetaFilter post Film nerds: beta-test my film app? deleted. The mod team had agreed that this was okay to post, but the community clearly disagrees and we're going to listen to them!
Mod note on 'The rise of the โpassport broโ trend.'
anoldfriend6: "Many people on the internet assume posters on the other side of the screen are straight white men by default. Well, most people here know Iโm lesbian. Butโฆam I white, black, or Bhutanese? Who knows?"
Somehow i missed this one the other day, and i'm sorry. anoldfriend6, this kind of thing isn't okay; please don't do it. either talk about your own experiences with race or don't, but this kind of "am i white or not?" thing comes across as very edgelordy and gross.
Mod note on 'I've embraced professional hater status'
Hi, folks. Some housekeeping notes:
- i made the link in this comment clickable.
- marshmallow tester, one deleted for ableism. blind programmers exist and they tend to have an excellent understanding of both UI and UX. I left up your Flowers for Algernon reference but that too verges on ableism; please be more careful.
- okayturnip's comment was not a personal attack on cortex; it was a joke and i'm leaving it. but folks, just in general, please do be mindful that sometimes tone doesn't come across in text!
Mod note on 'Someone take this house'
One deleted as noise. Folks, i'm not gonna leave a big hole by deleting a ton of stuff, but be advised that this thread has gone โฆ non-optimally in a number of ways.
tara city, you have been pretty hostile about folks asking clarifying questions; it's certainly okay to decline to answer clarifying questions that folks ask, but (a) it'll probably affect the quality of the answers if folks don't feel like they have enough information, and (b) it's not okay to be rude while doing so.
Answerers, please do not be snarky with Askers even when they frustrate you; if you don't feel like you can get a clear enough picture of the problem to answer, it's okay to just not answer; especially in Ask, the optimal behavior here is to flag it and move on.

Mod note on 'The ultimate sin of any [platform] is contempt for the audience.'
Fixed missing word in OP, deleted a comment about the correction.
Mod note on 'Is 'executive' an actual skill?'
One deleted as noise.
Mod note on 'Organizing Product Docs?'
One duplicate comment removed.
Mod note on 'White Knight Simps Bring Down a Tate-Inspired Trafficker'
One deleted. We are not going to turn this thread into a referendum on whether "real men" engage in sexual abuse (they do) or whether girls and women are partly to blame because they like "alphas" (they are not).
Mod note on 'Sawyer Ave, Sunday Afternoon - Chronicle of an ICE Kidnapping'
Tagged as "USPolitics" and added to sidebar.
Mod note on 'The rise of the โpassport broโ trend.'
Three deleted. ambrosen, it is not okay to speak to or about other community members like that. (One was also deleted as a response to ambrosen's comment, and the third deleted comment was a dupe.)
Folks, there's now a MeTa up; if you have complaints about the subject matter of this post, the poster's behavior, or the way we moderate threads in general, those complaints need to go there.
Mod note on 'White Knight Simps Bring Down a Tate-Inspired Trafficker'
OP edited to put trigger warning above the fold and triggering content below it, at user's request. A few comments about the pre-change state of the post were deleted.
Mod note on 'The rise of the โpassport broโ trend.'
One deleted as noise.
Mod note on 'A game of two languages'
Fixed link in OP and deleted correction comment.
Mod note on 'Have you got Their attention?'
One deleted as noise.
Mod note on 'Water in the air an untapped water resource until now'
Removed two duplicate comments!
Mod note on 'You are so good looking'
One comment deleted as noise. Seriously, folks, if the presentation (as opposed to the content) of a link bothers you, it's okay to skip it.
Mod note on 'ELI5: Limassol, Cyprus - traumatic family funeral edition'
One deleted as noise. In general, folks, "join this subreddit" is not a good way to answer an Asker's question. Rather like "Google it" or "ask ChatGPT", it feels dismissive and generally isn't specific enough.
Mod note on '[UK] Find an air conditioned location near you!'
Nothing deleted, but MetaFilter is an international site, so yes, there are a lot of people from around the world who comment here; let's not make them feel like exotic animals, please.
Mod note on 'Saying it plain and simple.'
Two deleted. Henry Fool, do not be a jerk to other users. (Plus one comment deleted for responding to the deleted comment.)
Mod note on 'The influencer teaching millions to fear solar'
One comment deleted. "Sometimes misogyny is cool" is not an appropriate sentiment for MetaFilter even when the woman in question is objectively shitty.
Mod note on 'DO NOT ANSWER - Superman'
Edited link in OP at user's request, and deleted a comment that was strictly about the correction. Also added a link to the ungated content on Skyview.
Also, folks, seriously, the first couple comments in a thread do not need to be about how the content is paywalled or account-gated or otherwise inaccessible. Said content is also not against the guidelines to post; you can continue to flag it if it annoys you, but those flags are unlikely to be acted on. It would be good if folks posting Bluesky content remembered to add an (ungated) link to Skyview, but you can also bookmark Skyview and use it yourself.
Mod note on 'Silo: It's All Good'
Added "Show Only" as the discussion type to help with navigation from other eps.
Mod note on 'AI Companies Are Buying Antique Books, Ingesting, Then Destroying.'
Folks, please try not to get into a direct back-and-forth/slapfight in the thread, thanks.
Mod note on 'Musical Theater For Non-Musical-Theater People'
Edited this comment in consultation with the user.
Mod note on 'Irish musician Glen Hansard dead at 56'
Hey, folks, legit information about someone's misdeeds is generally fine in an obit thread; i'm not going to remove it. However, MisantropicPainforest, please do try to keep it contained to a single comment in future, instead of three in a row?
Mod note on 'All right what about YOUR seventies? The decade, I mean.'
Edited link in this comment to be clickable.
Deleted ask post 'It's Nun of Your Business'
Ask MetaFilter post It's Nun of Your Business deleted. Asking about an old article is fine but this question, as phrased, is kind of an invitation to doxx someone? (And one of the answers did in fact doxx her, or someone with the same name.)
Mod note on 'It's Nun of Your Business'
One deleted for outright doxxing. I'm also going to be deleting the post, but wanted to leave a mod note about the deleted comment, first.
Deleted ask post 'It's Nun of Your Business'
Ask MetaFilter post It's Nun of Your Business deleted. Asking about an old article is fine but this question, as phrased, is kind of an invitation to doxx someone? (And several of the answers did in fact doxx her, or someone with the same name.)
Mod note on 'More-equitable local taxing'
Two deleted for not answering the question.
Mod note on 'MetaFilter is Hiring!'
phunniemee: "I feel compelled to mention the Jobs post wasn't as ugly in preview, but mean ol Metafilter stripped out my html upon posting. C'est la vie, don't @ me. (Unless you're applying to be our Community Operations Manager, in which case please @ me!)"
I have cleaned up the HTML in the jobs post so it's less ugly now!
I have cleaned up the HTML in the jobs post so it's less ugly now!
Mod note on 'Future of Fighting Wildfires?'
Made link clickable in this comment.
Mod note on '"But I would be ashamed to have written any part of this script"'
BlackLeotardFront: "Even so, I must say it reads better than yours!"
Regardless of the provocation, it's best not to snipe at other users like this. (I know i'm not perfect about this either! Just, please make an effort?)
Mod note on '"But I would be ashamed to have written any part of this script"'
Folks, nothing deleted, and this isn't a thing that's really addressed in the guidelines as they currently stand, but: i really wish we could, as a community, move away from complaining about stuff like paywalls, video runtimes, and/or Javascript, especially early in a thread. It tends to pick up a bunch of flags and it not-infrequently derails the conversation entirely.
If you can't access the links in a post on terms that are acceptable to you, it's okay to just not comment.
Mod note on 'Am I overreacting?'
Anonymized post at user's request
Mod note on '3(1 player)'
Fixed an issue with the post, at the poster's request.
Mod note on 'USPolitics tag is not automatic'
Okay, i have talked to frimble and apparently there's some institutional knowledge that didn't get transmitted to me (and possibly to other mods as well). There are actually two separate things going on here, and i had been under the impression that they were the same thing: Adding the "USPolitics" tag to a post allows it to be hidden using the "hide US politics" toggle. However, adding a post to the sidebar and actually hiding it does have to be done manually. I'll bear this in mind going forward and make sure the rest of the mods know this as well.
Mod note on 'USPolitics tag is not automatic'
For the record: this should be happening automatically based on the tag these days; it should not require a manual setting by a mod anymore. And I'm seeing those two posts hidden when I log in with my normal account and toggle "hide US Politics". But out of an abundance of caution, I have also gone ahead and hidden them manually.
Mod note on 'Tell me of your cold noodle recipes'
Made link clickable in this comment.
Mod note on 'Trump Admin Admits Canceling Grants to States That Did Not Vote for Him'
One comment deleted as noise.
Mod note on 'The Billionairesโ Vagina Club'
Fixed typo in this comment and removed a comment that only existed to make the correction.
Mod note on 'The Billionairesโ Vagina Club'
Again, folks, discussion about moderation needs to go to MetaTalk. We'll be deleting any further comments about it from here.
Mod note on 'should we allow links from...monsters?'
Folks, please do not get into a slapfight with each other in here.
Mod note on 'The expensive monitors that also serve you ads'
Edited link in this comment to be clickable.
Mod note on 'The Billionairesโ Vagina Club'
(Also, two deleted: one at the user's request, and the other because it was a reply to the deleted comment and became meaningless without it.)
Mod note on 'The Billionairesโ Vagina Club'
beesbees: "So if the subject was about a Proctologist in Silicon Valley catering to billionaires, then you couldn't say "What a bunch of assholes"?"
Well, just for starters, "assholes" isn't a gendered slur.
It is not acceptable to call women "cunts" on MetaFilter. Even if the women are rich shitheads. Even if you're from a Commonwealth country. Even if you do it in a plausibly deniable way with some of the letters replaced with asterisks. It is just not something we're going to allow.
If you would like us to change our guidelines and policies around misogynist slurs, that discussion belongs in MetaTalk.
Mod note on 'The Billionairesโ Vagina Club'
Folks, i'm not going to leave a big hole in the thread with deletions but we are not gonna do jokey usage of misogynist slurs on MetaFilter, even if it's got some letters missing, and even if it's something where you can do the plausible-deniability "oh, but i meant the actual body part!" thing.
Paul Slade, that wasn't acceptable; take a break from this thread and don't do this again.
