Mod note on 'Movie: Slither'
Fixed typo in OP.
Mod note on 'North of North: Ghosted'
Fixed typo in OP.
Mod note on 'The Premier League was a lie'
I'm not deleting anything for now, but please do keep this thread focused on the actual topic. References to parallel situations are okay for comparison purposes, but let's not derail.
Mod note on 'Out of Hawk'
Also, made link clickable in this comment. Sorry for the double mod note!
Mod note on 'How Seriously Should We Take Trump's Threats to Annihilate Iran?'
Nothing deleted, but please note that calling anyone a "bitch" is strongly discouraged at MetaFilter.
Mod note on 'Cornell Wonโt, We Will'
One deleted as a duplicate; also, Kate Manne's name fixed in this comment (it was misspelled).
Mod note on 'Out of Hawk'
Folks, everyone is overwhelmed and the world is on fire but please try not to snark at each other.
Mod note on 'Negotiations - Free Threads'
One deleted because it was likely to be disruptive. Folks, we know about the possible ban-evasion and we're investigating. If we turn out to be wrong, we'll restore the comment.
Mod note on 'Last Adherents of the Ancien Regime?'
Two deleted for not answering the question.
Mod note on 'Introducingโฆ MeFiโs first Community Operations Manager!'
Fixed broken link in OP.
Mod note on 'Motherless.com'
One deleted (one reply left up for context). To be very clear: testosterone is not a magic rape hormone, rapists do not rape because of their biology, and that sort of comment is not acceptable on MetaFilter.
Mod note on 'something i've wondered since you purged all the real leftists'
I'm closing this -- I can't imagine it going anywhere good.
Mod note on 'The kids are alright'
One deleted at user's request.
Mod note on 'Cornell Wonโt, We Will'
One comment deleted as requested.
Mod note on 'Minor dog bite'
One deleted for not answering the question.
Mod note on 'Red wine betrayal'
One deleted for not answering the question.
Mod note on '"Thatโs the price you pay to be in community"'
Folks, please let's not get into a slapfight in this thread.
Mod note on 'ร la recherche du texte perdu'
Two deleted. (Full disclosure: one of them was mine; it included an unnecessary and fighty generalization against a group of people that includes many MeFites. The other deleted comment was a reply to mine.)
Mod note on 'Word for a particular way of splitting an ordered series into parts'
Two deleted at user's request.
Mod note on 'Bread for all, and roses too?'
Two deleted. Folks, it's not great when the first comment out of the gate is a downer, i get that, and pushback is 100% okay and expected. However, you cannot call other MeFites "paid shills" and you cannot talk about punching people in a way that seems like you are intentionally including MeFites in the list of punching victims.
Mod note on 'Who is most consistently appealing on screen?'
One deleted for not answering the question.
Mod note on 'How Beck's Relationship with Scientology led to Sea Change'
One comment removed as requested by OP.
Mod note on 'How Beck's Relationship with Scientology led to Sea Change'
Also removed the second paragraph (answering to trig) from this comment, as requested.
Mod note on 'How Beck's Relationship with Scientology led to Sea Change'
Trig's initial comments and one comment replying to it have been removed as requested. Please carry on.
Mod note on 'Legistar API and cosponsorship addition/removal dates'
Made link clickable in this comment.
Mod note on '"Thatโs the price you pay to be in community"'
Galvanic: It's okay to link to examples. But that specific example was probably not a good one to use, for all sorts of reasons, and it'd be better to link something directly rather than to a search engine.
Mod note on 'My terrible "smart" TV'
Fixed duplicate text issue in OP.
EDIT: I'd fixed some of the duplication but missed a spot; it's all cleaned up now. Sorry about that!
EDIT: I'd fixed some of the duplication but missed a spot; it's all cleaned up now. Sorry about that!
Mod note on '"Thatโs the price you pay to be in community"'
On further reflection, several deleted. A Heathen white supremacist group brings in more heat than light even as an analogy, and this conversation is not helped by more people sniping at each other.
Mod note on '"Thatโs the price you pay to be in community"'
Folks, this derail needs to stop now, thanks.
Mod note on 'โWell, isn't your family rich?โ'
I just want to thank the folks in here for heading off an early possible snarkfest and rerailing the conversation. Please continue to be your shining, considerate selves, whether cookies are involved or not.
Mod note on 'Who is most consistently appealing on screen?'
This question has gotten substantive answers, so i am not going to remove it (especially since it's clear that there is substantive disagreement about "chatfilter" that points to a need to revise our guidelines about it); however, questions in Ask really do need to be more specific and detailed than this in the future, please.
Mod note on 'Work praised in private, devalued in public'
A couple deleted. One was advocating a course of action that directly contradicted the Asker's requirements, and the other was part of a back-and-forth between users. I've left some of the other back-and-forth comments because they also contain useful information for the Asker, but folks, please remember that Ask is really not the place to get into arguments with other commenters.
Mod note on '"Is Pumpkin Spice back on the menu?"'
Moved Zalgo text below the fold (it was messing up the front page for some folks).
Mod note on 'New Cat Just Dropped'
Fixed link in OP to remove the redirect (share.google stuff doesn't work for everyone).
Mod note on 'In Fighting for Every Black Child, Did I Betray My Own?'
One deleted. It was disparaging in a way that i don't think was going to contribute to healthy conversation.
Mod note on '"Thatโs the price you pay to be in community"'
Folks, things are pretty much okay in here but just โฆ do keep in mind that all of the people at the sharp end of this story are, in various ways, really vulnerable. Criticism is fine but one or two comments feel like they're trending a little bit toward treating various people as punchlines, and it'd be better for that not to happen.
Mod note on 'We must pace the frontier'
One deleted at user's request (it was in the wrong thread)
Mod note on '"57% of Dems want Biden officials in jail over Gaza"'
Added US Politics tag and fixed the typo in the hypocrisy tag. Also removed a comment for attacking OP personally. Folks, the title has been acknowledged as imprecise; please donโt continue the conversation by accusing the poster of lying or questioning their motives. If you want to discuss the pollโs wording, methodology, or what conclusions it can support, please do that specifically and without making it personal.
Deleted mefi post 'Great Anime Parody'
MetaFilter post Great Anime Parody deleted. Duplicate, this was posted two weeks ago.
Mod note on 'THE MOST CORRUPT PRESIDENT IN AMERICAN HISTORY: A CORRUPTION MODEL'
Two deleted for being in the wrong thread.
Mod note on 'Who has the best plan for universal US Healthcare?'
One comment deleted. It's against the Ask MeFi guidelines to get into back-and-forth exchanges with other users, and there are a couple comments in here that are skating on the edge of that, but this one was particularly snarky.
Deleted ask post 'The answer is "all of them". What could the question be?'
Ask MetaFilter post The answer is "all of them". What could the question be? deleted. Violates the guidelines against chatfilter-type questions
Mod note on 'In Fighting for Every Black Child, Did I Betray My Own?'
Made link in this comment clickable.
Edit: also edited the last paragraph in this comment as agreed with the commenter.
Mod note on 'In Fighting for Every Black Child, Did I Betray My Own?'
Folks, letโs please leave aside the broader ethics-of-having-children discussion. Itโs a subject with a lot of deeply personal lived experience behind it, and it rarely goes especially well here. Letโs keep the conversation focused on the article.
Mod note on 'Dark Matter: Stars, Hide Your Fires'
Corrected post to the right Dark Matter (2024)
Mod note on 'In Fighting for Every Black Child, Did I Betray My Own?'
A small language note about this comment: genitalia and gender are not the same thing. Please try to keep that distinction in mind in future comments. Gender identity and anatomy are not interchangeable, and that conflation can make the discussion less welcoming to trans and nonbinary people.
Mod note on 'Asking for Help in Finding a New Source of Protein'
One comment removed for not answering the question, also please don't diet-shame people for their eating habits.
Mod note on 'Speak Cheerfully, Doc.'
One deleted for not answering the question (and recommending a thing that the Asker specifically said they did not want.)
Mod note on 'What piece of ephemeral media goes to your very identity?'
Two comments removed; one for not answering the question and the other as a reply to that one.
Mod note on '"We are a university, not a bathing establishment."'
paduasoy: "There was another previously - mods, could you tag that one and the 2002 one with EmmyNoether?"
Good suggestion; i went ahead and tagged those both!
Mod note on 'Looking for help translating an old letter. I think it's in German'
One deleted. Comments that consist of LLM-generated content are against the guidelines, particularly in Ask.
Mod note on 'Portable SSD problemโmothing to eject'
Fixed typo in this comment.
Mod note on 'Just Do It'
Obviously, suggesting that people who perceive the ads as racist are merely "influence[d]" by other people's complaints, and/or are suffering from "hysteria", is wildly unacceptable. Unlike the previously deleted comment (from a different user), this one was not at all ambiguous, so Liquidwolf, i'm giving you the day off.
Mod note on 'Just Do It'
"Donโt love that you are covering for the racist who called us insane for seeing it. People should know who said that."
I understand feeling that way, but while the comment itself definitely needed to go (several folks interpreted it the same way i did, hence it getting flags), there was at least one innocuous alternative interpretation of exactly what was being called "insane". It's on record in case of future issues, but this is not something that's been a pattern for this particular user so i'm not gonna put them on blast at this time.
Mod note on 'The whale has destroyed him long before he faces it for the final time'
Fixed some messed-up formatting in this comment.
Mod note on 'Book: 1177 BC: The Year Civilization Collapsed'
Fixed weird formatting in OP and deleted a comment about the correction.
Mod note on 'Just Do It'
Also, one deleted; many Black folks and other people of color have expressed that they think the ad is really racist; you may not agree, and it's fine to say that, but calling their considered interpretation "insane" is not something we are gonna allow here. (Replies left up for context.)
Mod note on 'Ed Sheeran chooses cowardice'
One deleted at user's request.
Mod note on 'Help me recreate a bean dish I had in Jamaica'
Made link clickable in this comment.
Mod note on 'What are the hooks on the British Museum Reading Room desks for?'
Made link clickable in this comment.
Mod note on 'Just Do It'
Mod note on 'Cassie Workman Is Witchy AF'
Fixed typos in OP.
Mod note on 'You're back in the whole nepotistic patrimonial world*'
Folks, can we move away from dismissive characterizations of other commenters and their political motives, and go back to discussing the postโs subject. It is fine to disagree strongly about electoral strategy and party politics, but address specific claims without broad-brushing groups of users, assigning blame or complicity, or responding in kind. Iโve removed the relevant comments; please let this particular argument end here.
Mod note on 'Did I make a mistake (gallbladder version)?'
Corrected text in post as pointed out by OP. Please carry on.
Mod note on 'I have a task that is perfect for ai...now what?'
One deleted. It sorta answered the question but i think encouraging software piracy as a solution in this instance is a bit too far afield.
Mod note on 'Rare and handsome waders'
One deleted; it was one of those comments that's probably fine later in a thread, but as the second comment it's going to irritate everyone and possibly derail the thread entirely.
Mod note on 'The Mother Tongue of All Secrets'
One comment removed; in this particular case, an apology is unnecessary and potentially revives the derail.
Mod note on 'LG Sanctions Bill Doesn't Sanction Russia, Does Give Trump Tariff Powers'
Made links clickable in this comment.
Mod note on 'AI Safety Is Mostly A Sex Cult'
CCBC: just fyi, more discussion about the regulatory side of things is happening over in this other thread. This thread here is more discussing the evil sex cult side of things. (They are way overlapping, and i'm not telling you to go away! Just that you may get better results in the other thread.)
Mod note on 'AI Safety Is Mostly A Sex Cult'
(Replaced link in OP with a link to a different unroller; the original unroller apparently got hugged to death.)
Mod note on 'You're back in the whole nepotistic patrimonial world*'
A few comments deleted. The discussion has veered into familiar election relitigation arguments and is becoming increasingly personal. Please step back from assigning blame, calling other participants complicit, or characterizing groups of voters with broad insults. Also, Pseudonymous Cognomen, please take a step back in this thread and let other members participate.
If you want to continue, engage the specific issues, electoral strategy, trans rights, coalition politics, or the threadโs larger subject, with care for the people affected and without treating fellow commenters as proxies for an opposing camp.
Mod note on 'You're back in the whole nepotistic patrimonial world*'
Added USPolitics tag.
Mod note on 'What's your best advice for a home made tomatillo salsa?'
Made link in this comment clickable.
Mod note on 'Is there a print edition of Condรฉ Nast "Dogue"?'
Two more deleted. Folks, please note that you do have to answer the actual question.
Mod note on 'Is there a print edition of Condรฉ Nast "Dogue"?'
Two deleted; one for misreading the question and one reply to that one.
Mod note on 'How do you convince your parents to spend money for important reasons?'
One deleted for not answering the question.
Mod note on 'I have a task that is perfect for ai...now what?'
Several comments deleted for not answering the question and getting into back-and-forths with other users. Folks, i don't know why several of you decided to wild out in this Ask, but it's not acceptable.
Mod note on 'I have 12L of mustard in a dispenser bag. What's next?'
Made link clickable in this comment.
Mod note on 'Ed Sheeran chooses cowardice'
(Deleted one more that i'd missed as part of the thread cleanup)
Mod note on 'Why is my car windshield dirty on the inside?'
One deleted for asking a question already answered by the OP. The OP has already indicated that their kid does not vape, folks.
Mod note on 'Ed Sheeran chooses cowardice'
Several comments deleted. Sorry for leaving a big hole in the thread, but folks, what part of "this needs to not turn into a general thread about Palestine/Israel/Zionism" was unclear?
Also, being an asshole to other users isn't acceptable even if you think they deserve it, and meta-discussion about how polite our discourse should be needs to get taken to MetaTalk.
Mod note on 'We must pace the frontier'
One deleted. jeffburdges, i believe you want the Elon Musk documentary thread?
Mod note on 'Why is my car windshield dirty on the inside?'
One deleted (asked a clarifying question that was already answered in the OP)
Mod note on 'Ed Sheeran chooses cowardice'
Folks, i'm not removing anything at this point, and i'm aware that i participated in the early stages of this derail, but at this point it is getting pretty derail-y. It'd be good if comments in this thread stayed relatively focused on Sheeran, his tour, the other acts, etc. You don't have to stop talking about Palestine entirelyโit's obviously a critical piece of why this is happeningโbut this needs to not turn into a general thread about Palestine/Israel/Zionism.
(If someone would like to make a general "news about Palestine" thread, there certainly is plenty of it recently, and i invite you to do so.)
Mod note on 'The Pollinator Industrial Complex'
Fixed link in OP. Also deleted some comments related to the correction.
Mod note on 'How are you productively using AI?'
Two deleted for not answering the question.
Mod note on 'Hallux Rigidus'
Adjusted wording in OP's comment as requested.
Mod note on 'IANAL but I may need one.'
One comment removed for not answering the question. Flagging and moving on rather than replying to another comment in disagreement would be appreciated.
Mod note on 'what graphic memoirs would I like to read next?'
Hey folks! Just a quick reminder that self-promotional posts or links are against our Content Policy. I have removed the link to OPs graphic memoirs in the original post due to this, please carry on.
Mod note on 'Sitting for prolonged periods in an electric vs manual wheelchair'
One deleted for not answering the question.
Mod note on 'Final Chapter of the 7 Up Documentary Series Set to Close with 70 Up'
Added "7up" and "UpSeries" tags to post.
Mod note on 'Save the Date: No Kings Is Back October 17!'
One deleted; jeffburdges, pretty sure your wage-theft comment was intended for a different thread!
Mod note on 'The Mother Tongue of All Secrets'
Nothing deleted, but folks, we all really have to get out of the habit of complaining about the headline, the format, the link source, etc. in the first couple comments in a thread. It is corrosive to discussion! If your first impulse, seeing a FPP, is irritation or disgust, it's okay to skip it and come back later (or not at all)!
Mod note on 'The island, the cafe, the dog, and the legal case'
One deleted; this thread is definitely not going to be improved by an unrelated mention of Israel.
Mod note on 'Just Make the Button Blue, Hal'
Again, folks, please keep discussion at least vaguely focused on the OP. If you want to talk more about "AI" in general, there's an open MeTa for freeform complaining.
Mod note on 'Just Make the Button Blue, Hal'
Hey, folks, i get that this stuff is just โฆ all-encompassing, but please try to keep the conversation focused on this particular link rather than having it turn into another generic "AI" discussion?
Mod note on 'Why the toilet in the shelter always gets destroyed'
Fixed link in this comment to be clickable.
Mod note on 'Japanese Grandpa Going Viral for His Cats.....'
One comment deleted. The content is clearly marked as being Instagram; if you avoid Facebook and their works (which is 100% valid!) it's totally okay to just skip this one.
Deleted mefi post 'Papyrus is a virus'
MetaFilter post Papyrus is a virus deleted. This is a duplicated post..
Mod note on '"It was winter when Elisse Burke ran her campaign of Band of Blades"'
Hey folks, no comments removed but can we stop asking "What does this link to, and why would I want to click on it?" right off the bat in a thread. It sound like a reasonable question but it tends to derail the conversation right away, As mentioned in a previous thread, if the issue is that the post doesn't summarize what the link contain well enough, that's fair feedback, but posting almost the same "What does this link to, and why would I want to click on it?" comment in every thread reads as combative rather than curious. Thanks.
